Her Melanin By Dan Andre

Her Melanin

As I speak if I were a reverend
Cite this sermon for a second
To discuss about this felon
Who should be convicted of robbing me
Of my attention
My affection
Infatuation
The psych ward had no cure for me
For I go crazy for her melanin
That color of her skin
Dark brown to light is a win
How it glows in the sunlight, moonlight, club lights, blacklights, should be a sin
Dont even know where to begin
Ya pigment represents power
You dont even realize it yet
Cuz this world fears descendants of past queens
They pray for ya downfall n demise of your dreams
That instead of you stand to achieve, you stay n lay on your back, stomach or ya knees
But see I come from a different breed
Where I been taught the potential of a woman of color
For I did not learn from mi hermano or a brother
I was taught strength from my mother
Early education from my grandmother
2 teachers feeding me knowledge through the books n the streets
Mom told me bout her melanin, her wins n defeats
How she rose above the hood, got her family, career & degrees
And even when she seemed invincible, she showed that she bleeds
Told me to watch my heart, these women prey on the weak
Their hues can distort your vision, deadly lies cut through their teeth
But as this young lion grows, princesses coming to me
With a fistful or tears, and its starting to leak
Cuz they unsure of their future, situations look bleak
Slaves to stereotypes n statistics, they just want to be free
Yet as that that crown falls, i pick it up
Dust it off,
Wipe her eyes
Put her crown back on
And remind her that she's destined to be a star
In this day n age, yes, life is hard
You dont climb up a mountain without getting some scars
Go for that eagle, never settle for the par
She wont drown in that lake, stay stuck in that dune
She fly high in that sky, she has all this room
For that yellow, butter pecan, cinnamon, caramel, mahogany, mocha, chocolate, dark chocolate.
These shades will always keep them at bay.
Doesn't matter where she stay, or lay
You saw Empire last night, now create yours today
Seen your melanin watch the throne, claim your reign
As the process requires to deal with pain, gain & to maintain
Be that caretaker. That love maker
That sooth sayer. And most of all...
Be the woman in that skin.
Her Melanin

Started off as a small situation
With hands of infatuation and a bond that
Can only expose our sensitive places
In a way that traps your mind body soul and your entire being
It was cool it was safe it was chill
Until the thrill became deeper than a steep hill and the excitement of our love began to grow in a still fixture
We're stuck.
Stuck between each other's love like a fly caught in a web and now you're my dinner
I devour your mind as you.... devour my behind....the peaceful place we allow our souls to rest and and the gruesome place we Allow our fears to grow...
Come run away with me , somewhere far where we leave no trace of what once resided in this place
Manipulate my mind and stimulate my medulla strip me of my stubborn ways so that I can give you the best of me in raw
Unadulterated ways.
How did we even get here? I mean
We started off as a small situation with hands of infatuation and a bond that exposed our sensitive places
But now here we are with our lives intertwined ..so closely knit it is impossible to synthesize
We went from lust to love from just being beneath each other to live above
The standards of how young lovers should be. Maybe this was meant to be
Or maybe you were just meant for me. Because now you're stuck
And there's no way to Escape this web
